episode 2
This episode will explore the Asian Underground. Perfectly defined by journalist Ammar Kalia in The Guardian as “A product of the first wave of Asian immigration into the UK in the early 60s and their children growing up in a newly diversifying society – one imbued with the racism of the National Front, as well as with a burgeoning multiculturalism from the Caribbean and west Africa – the music these first-generation British Asians made was full of internal tension.”
Music that casts tension, rightgeously moody and fiercely rythmic. In other words; "An exploration of identity, migration and cross-cultural dialogue" [Melodigging]
Although I chose to focus on the dubstep, dub and dnb side there are many other genres that Asian underground took over such as hiphop or indie. Other famous musicans I don't talk about about that are worth checking out are Asian Dub Foundation and Black Star Liner (amongst others). More on the mainstream side but sill real good: Panjabi MC and Cornershop.
